Provost Newsletter - June 2023

June 12, 2023

Dear Colleagues,

Much has happened at Baylor since I arrived here four years ago. Together we have navigated COVID-19, reached Carnegie’s highest research status of R1, and doubled graduate student enrollments – while also continuing to deepen our longstanding commitment to providing a transformative undergraduate education in a caring Christian community.

As we embark on the process of creating a new strategic plan, it is important to take the pulse, so to speak, of the faculty. I want to know how you are experiencing these changes. What do you find most inspiring? Where are your pain points?

To this end, we will turn to a process familiar to many. In the fall of 2019, led by Dr. Jason MacGregor and Dr. Lenore Wright, we partnered with the COACHE collaborative and issued a university-wide survey of faculty perspectives in the spring of 2020. This well-tested survey allowed us to compare our results to those of other universities. The overall results were extremely positive. At the same time, the results showed us some areas in which we could do better. The campus community has worked hard over the past three years to act on the recommendations from the survey. While I do not consider our work on these recommendations to be complete, I do think it is time for another check-in.

Dr. Forest Kim and Dr. Gaynor Yancey have agreed to lead a new task force to launch the survey in the spring of 2024. They will be assisted by the experience of Dr. MacGregor and Dr. Wright. A complete list of the committee members is available on the Office of the Provost website.

We look forward to their good work.

Warmly,

Nancy Brickhouse, Ph.D.
Provost

Coming Soon: New Curriculum Inventory Management (CIM) System
This fall, Baylor will launch a new Curriculum Inventory Management System, CIM, by CourseLeaf. This system will allow us to centralize and standardize our curriculum processes across the University. CIM will replace the existing BearQuest Electronic Course Action (ECA) and Curriculum Change Request (CCR) processes, along with any other Proposal Routing Forms (PDF files) that are currently in use. Information about the implementation is available on the Office of the Registrar's website.  Additional resources will be added as they become available.

New Compliance and Research Administration (CARA) System to Launch June 26
Baylor's new electronic research administration system, CARA, is set to go live on June 26. All active Ignite awards will be live in CARA at that time, as well as pilot proposal-related functions. The pilot departments will submit proposals through CARA while OVPR observes that workflow, roles, and access are operating as expected. We anticipate piloting proposals through the summer, with campus-wide go-live date planned for September 4. Watch for role-specific CARA training offered throughout the summer and fall.
