Faculty Hiring
Each dean (or designee), department chair, search committee chair, and dean’s assistant who will be involved with one or more faculty searches in the coming year is expected to attend the mandatory training on conducting faculty searches hosted by the Office of the Provost.

Please review the steps below for both full-time and adjunct (part-time temporary) faculty hires. If you have any questions, contact the senior coordinator of faculty appointments and policy (full-time hiring) or the senior coordinator for academic affairs (adjunct hiring).
Full-Time Faculty Hiring
- Appoint a Search Committee and distribute the Office of General Counsel's Key Legal Considerations in Hiring document.
- Write a hiring plan for the position. The purpose of the plan is to demonstrate that effort will be exerted to maximize the ability to identify a deep and broad pool of applicants.
- Draft a job description with applicant qualifications and criteria
- Submit position in Interfolio which includes your hiring plan, job description, qualifications, and criteria.
- Attend a Faculty Search Seminar hosted by the Office of the Provost.
- Publicize the position externally as per your hiring plan. Use the pre-approved external advertising template and refer to the Publications & Organizations for Job Postings.

Review the applicants. All applicants who submit by the published deadline and meet minimum qualifications must be evaluated by the Search Committee.
Use the rating system in Interfolio to assess each applicant.
Conduct initial interviews.
Determine finalists. All searches must have 3 finalists per position; approval for fewer finalists must be granted in advance by the vice provost for faculty affairs (VPFA).
- Submit completed applicant files of finalists, including the Faculty Certification of Credentials Form (FCCF), for Office of the Provost review and approval. See more about the FCCF under Forms & Resources.
- Arrange final interviews with Office of the Provost by contacting the Senior Coordinator for Faculty Hiring and Promotions.
Conduct final interviews.
Recommend hire through Interfolio. As a reminder, units may not begin negotiations until applicant selected for hire is approved.
After approval, negotiate with applicant.
Issue the contract via unit business officer.
For full-time faculty, follow the Total Contract Management (TCM) Guide instructions to ensure that Human Resources (HR) can begin onboarding. HR will conduct a background check on all faculty, usually after the contract has been signed.
Refer to the Human Resources website as you walk through onboarding your new faculty.

Adjunct (Part-Time Temporary) Faculty Hiring
Appoint a Committee Manager and review the Office of General Counsel's Key Legal Considerations in Hiring document.
Draft a job description with applicant qualifications and criteria.
Submit position for approval in Interfolio.
Attend an Adjunct Faculty Search Seminar hosted by the Office of the Provost.

Adjunct Search Training- This training is for business officers, office managers, dean assistants, and anyone hiring part-time, temporary adjuncts. For questions, please contact Jeremy Crews. For follow-up questions, please contact the vice provost for faculty affairs or visit during office hours.

Communicate with business officer to submit a New Hire Faculty Personnel Action Form (PAF) complete with Interfolio ID#. This will initiate vice provost approvals and HR processing.
Issue the contract via unit business officer.
For part-time adjunct faculty, HR will onboard (and conduct background checks) through the SharePoint process.
Refer to the Human Resources website as you walk through onboarding your new faculty.
