About Research Leave

A University research leave is a one- or two-semester release from teaching and administrative duties during the academic year. During a one-semester leave, a faculty member will receive full contract salary and benefits. During a two-semester leave, a faculty member will receive 80% of his or her contract salary and full benefits. Two-semester leaves will run from the first full faculty meeting in August to commencement in May. The faculty member may obtain outside funding for the remaining salary differential. This research leave policy does not apply to the law school, which has its own policy for sponsoring faculty research.

Research leave is funded by the dean of the relevant college or school; thus, the decisions belong to the dean. The role of the Office of the Provost in this process is 1) to review the dean’s selected awardees prior to their official notification in order to check for any conduct, investigation, or procedural issues that may make it undesirable to award at this time and 2) to post the final awardees (as below) after they are notified and before the start of the academic year in which they will have research leave.
