Guidelines on Hiring Instructors to Teach Extended Learning Courses
Purpose
The purpose of this guideline is to clarify the requirements for instructors hired to teach non-credit-bearing extended learning courses at Baylor University.
Principles
Extended learning refers to flexible, post-secondary courses designed for adult learners and professionals. They are not offered for Baylor University course credit (“non-credit bearing”).
Instructors hired to teach extended learning courses are categorized as adjunct lecturers under BU-PP 720. They are hired in accordance with existing policy and procedures for adjunct lecturers with two exceptions:
- they are exempt from the credentialing requirement as laid in BU-PP 717,
- and the Office of the Provost does not require official transcripts to be on file.
If an adjunct lecturer hired to teach an extended learning course(s) is also assigned to teach a credit-bearing course(s), these exceptions do not apply. All adjunct lecturers who are assigned to teach a credit-bearing course must be credentialed in accordance with BU-PP 717.
Baylor University staff members may be hired as adjunct lecturers to teach extended learning courses and must comply with BU-PP 034.
