Jeff Strietzel
Assistant Vice President of Provost Initiatives
Dr. Jeff Strietzel was appointed to serve as the inaugural assistant vice president of provost initiatives in September 2022. His work involves synthesizing and communicating multidisciplinary research projects that rally human and financial resources to advance Baylor University’s strategic plan.
Dr. Strietzel’s prior experience in higher education includes teaching and administrative roles at six U.S. institutions in the Midwest and South over the past dozen years. These roles have spanned the areas of student academic support, student activities, residential life, food service, assessment, graduate student recruitment, campus tours, enrollment services, and university advancement. Dr. Strietzel has also served in student leadership and staff representative roles at each of the institutions at which he has worked.
He earned a B.A. degree in religious studies at Moody Bible Institute (Chicago, IL), an M.A. degree in college student development at Taylor University (Upland, IN), and a Ph.D. in higher education leadership at Baylor University (Waco, TX).
He has taught courses in leadership theory and leadership development, college student success, and the culture and organization of higher education at various institution types.
A scholar of American higher education and educational leadership, Dr. Strietzel takes a keen interest in the lived experiences and sensemaking of college and university leaders, especially as they experience and navigate adversity, such as job loss and career derailment. He has also studied scholar practitioner socialization and development, college student success, and innovative practices that support college affordability and campus engagement.
A self-declared “higher ed. nerd,” Dr. Strietzel regularly presents scholarship and promising practices at conferences. He has won modest and sundry research grants, awards, and fellowships. He is published in prominent journals in the academic fields of higher education and student affairs and recently completed service as Managing Editor of the Student Affairs on Campus journal. He occasionally consults and speaks on various leadership topics.
