Faculty Regent Notification Letter
September 1, 2026
Dear Faculty Colleagues,
In February 2017, the Baylor Board of Regents created positions for two faculty regents to serve as full voting members of the Board (Regents Honoris Causa). The purpose of adding these faculty regents to the Board was to provide expertise to the Regents regarding academia and to provide a valuable perspective as a faculty member at Baylor. Like other Regents, the sole responsibility of the faculty regent is to serve and act in the best interest of Baylor University.
Dr. Andrew Arterbury has been serving in this critical role. His term ends this academic year. Thus, we need to replace him on the Board of Regents for a three-year term beginning on June 1, 2027.
According to Baylor’s bylaws, each faculty regent must be tenured. All nominees must meet criteria applicable to regents generally and agree to adhere to all policies adopted by the Board applicable to regent conflicts, behavior, and actions, including maintaining confidentiality. Faculty regents are, therefore, not required to be Baptist. Faculty regents may not simultaneously serve on the Board of another BGCT institution of higher education or HighGround Advisors (formerly the Baptist Foundation of Texas). The Faculty Senate has added one additional criterion: nominees must have served as a full-time member of the Baylor faculty for at least the previous eight years and as full-time faculty members at an institution of higher education for at least twelve years.
If nominated, a Faculty Senator must recuse herself or himself from the nomination process. The Chair-Elect of the Faculty Senate, Dr. Ian Gravagne, will serve as the chair of the nomination process. The Faculty Senate will function as the nominating committee for faculty regents and will collect and carefully review nomination packages from eligible, willing nominees. The Senate will vote on nominees from those nominees and send these results to the Interim Provost. He will then recommend a final slate of 3-4 to be interviewed by Regents. The Regents will make the final selection, per Baylor’s bylaws.
To nominate a faculty member for the open board position or to self-nominate, please submit nominations to Ian Gravagne (Ian_Gravagne@baylor.edu).
The deadline for nominations is Friday, September 25, 2026. Complete applications will be due by Friday, October 9, 2026.
Sincerely,
Lee Nordt, Interim Provost Emily Hunter, Faculty Senate Chair, 2026-2027
